I woke up this morning in Liverpool to the horrible news that my buddy David Roe Rorick had passed. I can’t believe it. Truly one of my favorite people on earth. Hilarious……when he walked into the studio I would look at him and just wait for something hilarious to come out of his mouth……which is what you want in the studio. This photo was taken after we recorded “Might as well smile” for the new record. Recently, he played on an artist’s record I produced. His credits included Johnny Cash, Dwight yoakum, Vern Gosdin, Jerry Reed, and a slew of others. He told me that when he was Vern’s band leader they went through around 120 drummers…….constantly firing drummers…..which I sort of understand, but that is another topic.
His stories were amazing, and I would have to consciously tamp them down in the studio with respect to time…….but could get lost in his road stories from his time with Cash. They were all hilarious and something we all live to hear.
One of my favorite memories was when we were recording a super country, two steppin’ tune……in the second verse he tried to throw in a little jazzy lick……I had my eyes closed and when he hit that lick….I opened one eye and looked at him……not giving the stink eye, but just to confirm visually what I wa hearing…….the take finished and it was mostly nailed, but I asked Mike to roll it back to that verse. Dave laughed and said, “ I thought I could slide that past you”……..we had a good laugh and he fixed the part. He said the look I gave him reminded him of my dad…..which made me feel good.
Dave had a way of placing the notes…….which could only come from years in the road with guys like Cash…….or Reed. The deepest pocket I’ve experienced.
Last week while I was driving through Texas I had his number ready to dial……just to shoot the sh*t……and I must have been distracted by another call. I didn’t make the call. I wish I had.
Dave has been on my mind all day. I can’t believe he is gone. Loved that guy. The world and Nashville has been diminished with his passing. Love to his family and friends. I spoke often and proudly of his wife, Leslie and his son. Prayers. Love you bud.

Spent Father’s Day with my Dad’s muse Mr. Ron Oates…..celebrated his birthday and felt good to spend some time with the man. We are also in the process of making some music together. We laugh so hard together and I feel like I’m a small part of something beautiful that we are creating. We got keys on the next song or two in between the laughter. I took this photo and showed @ronoates and he laughed his butt off. Ha ha. It is non-stop with him. Anyway, happy birthday Ron and happy Father’s Day to all.

Happy Birthday to Dad. His time came way to early. I was hoping we would have these years together. Raising Beau, who was born at 10pm…..2 hours off his birthday…..it is a little like raising my Dad. I yearn just to be able to reach out and speak to Dad and I know that he would have loved to see Beau reach 18 as he did yesterday. Milestones hurt the worst. Anyway, miss you Dad. You were an amazing person and your memorial was one for the ages…….so many men and women got up and spoke about how you changed their lives. You were special. Your first visit to Nashville with Buddy, J.I., and Sonny Curtis led to ya’ll being sent back home to Lubbock with no money and sharing one cheeseburger between the four of you, yet years later you were one of the guys making waves in Nashville in that very same building that housed the studio ya’ll recorded in. Happy birthday. I love you and miss you and so wish Beau could see his grandad again at this age. Knowing where you came from……this song you wrote for Roy Orbison is so damn poignant…..perfect, actually.

Spent some time with my second parents, Annette an

Spent some time with my second parents, Annette and Jerry Fuller. Jerry is one of my dad’s closest friends and these two took me in and were my counselors during my five years in Hollywood. I probably spent 3 nights a week at their house….usually including dinner. I was able to absorb incredible stories from these two lovebirds. They have lived a beautiful life and are still going strong. Jerry produced everyone from Gary Puckett and the Union Gap to Johnny Mathis, and eventually Colin Raye. Dad said that Jerry was one of his all-time favorite singers. Jerry wrote “traveling’ man” for Ricky Nelson in 10 minutes while sitting in his car, waiting on Annette to get off work. He played it for Al Green’s manager and when he left his manager threw it in the trash. Ricky’s bass player heard it through the walls and went into green’s manager’s office and asked what song he had been playing. Green’s manager picked it out of the trash and gave it to him. He took it to Nelson and it ended up selling 6 million copies. I love these two and feel very grateful to have spent another evening with them. My time in Lubbock has been fantastic. It is one of the nicest places I’ve ever lived. Seriously polite and kind people from young to old. Caught my friend @dustingarrettmusic playing guitar with @ricktrevinomusic in the best music venue in Lubbock, Cactus Theater. Dad told me he and Buddy and Elvis went to see a movie when Elvis came through Lubbock and I would imagine it was at that very theater. I feel blessed to have spent some time in Dad’s hometown. Got to spend some time at Lubbock High and that was cool to walk those halls that Dad once walked…….nothing has changed and it is a masterpiece. Anyway, here’s to Lubbock. Time to move on soon……..and Rick Trevino puts in a classy show…..newfound respect.
