I’m sitting in LAX as I write this. A funny thing happened today. While at a business lunch in the valley I looked over and saw my co-writer, friend, and sometimes piano player, Matt Rollings.
Matt, in my opinion, is one of the best piano players in the world. You would know him from his work on “Walk Away Joe” by Trisha Yearwood/Don Henley, or songs like “The Song Remembers When”, and “Bus to St. Cloud”……he and I also wrote “Broken”, and probably the most well-known to the readers of this blog would be my song “Nothing”…….when I recorded that song I didn’t even have a third verse. I waited because I knew that when Matt came into play on it with me………..that I would be so inspired by his piano playing that the words would come-that is what happened……..first take………..and the third verse came rolling out.
I’ve been feeling like I would really like to get another record written and recorded by the January tour, and have in recent months been writing with folks like Jeff Russo from a band called Tonic. I met Jeff years ago when I was recording my second record for A&M, and they were recording their debut record in the studio next door. We used to take breaks and play fetch with my dog Gibson in the parking lot. They went on to win a Grammy from that record. I’m a huge fan of his guitar playing, and now that he is doing more singer-songwriter stuff…..i’m totally digging that, too.
Anyway, it’s funny how the universe works. Near the end of the chance meeting with Matt yesterday, he said, “why don’t you come out to the studio sometime, and we can write a bit”………he said just what I was thinking.
My perfect scenario would be to come to LA and just hole up in the studio, and write and record as we go. I’ve got the record inside, but just need the proper setting to get it out.
I know some of you may be thinking……when is Kevin going to write a new record?!!!?!? Well, the truth is that life is a balancing act at times. I’ve been balancing raising a four year old, trying to make a living on the road, and just the more mundane, yet beautiful intricacies of life.
Also, recording takes money, and that comes into play.
Anyway, it has been a good week. I got alot of work done on the 50 States in 50 Days tour, the upcoming UK tour, and and am now about to board a plane for London to play in Nottingham this Friday for the American-International Festival……..next weekend I play a festival in France. In between, it will be a house concert booking frenzy for the 50 States tour–email if you are interesting in hosting a house concert in your state!
Also, Last night, towards the end of the evening I made contact with a singer-songwriter that I’ve become a huge fan of recently, and it looks like she may open the winter UK tour………mission accomplished.

It’s really a test in patience to wait and let everything come into place. But I’ve found that if I just let things roll along freely, they align better than I could have ever placed them.
Hope your flight goes well!

Hi Kevin,
I don’t want to become a serial blog responder… but I had to add something here…
Life is a balancing / Juggling act ALL the time. When we were all in Crete most people agreed that you seem to keep more balls in the air than most others put together… Either way, you just have to start writing and recording that record. It’s been way to long since ‘True’ and you have a rare gift to share.
I guess the tours give you inspiration and maybe the driving is good for the soul – but the wheels are small and the world is large and those songs of yours are forever… They are a legacy and will travel faster and farther than you ever can.
It’s a God-darn crime against humanity to keep your new stuff from us for so long..!!! (and a new record is a great reason for a promotion tour)
I’m stopping rambling now and promise to shut up for at least a month.. Honest !
Adios
