Another Long Story

Singer-songwriter Kevin Montgomery is one of those hard-to-peg artists who sit in the gray area separating rock from country and pop from folk. Now you know why he's been struggling while trying to make a name for himself in the rigid, format-driven stateside music scene since the release of his impressive debut, 1993's Fear Nothing. In the U.K., however, he has a devoted following. On his native soil, he's just another unknown.

Another Long Story probably won't change his commercial fate, but at least the album is getting a proper release. Available overseas since 2000, Story deserves to be heard on this side of the Atlantic. Mr. Montgomery's appeal lies in his high lonesome voice, so piercing and melancholy, and the quietly beautiful melodies he crafts around poignant and picturesque lyrics.

While he doesn't rock out, there's a gritty intensity to his style. The album is filled with stellar songs, from the semiautobiographical title cut to the heartbreaking "Angel Tonight," about a woman on the verge of suicide. Equally engrossing are "Let's All Go to California," with its rock-charged rhythm and instantly memorable hook, and "Lookin' Out for #1," a stinging commentary on the selfish, indifferent side of human nature.

Powerful, all of it. These are songs that demand repeat listens.
