Another Long StoryRock 'n' ReelSeptember 2000 Dave White The follow-up to his 1994 debut, 'Fear Nothing', Kevin Montgomery comes up trumps with 'Another Long Story', featuring Doug Pettibone on a variety of guitars and background vocals. It reminds me of everything I liked about the 70s West Coast music of The Eagles, JD Souther, Joe Walsh and others too numerous to list. Montgomery has the kind of attractive voice that epitomises the laidback singer-songwriter, touting his guitar around the sunshine state. The title track and 'Let's All Go To California' are particularly strong opening numbers (the latter reminiscent, in its grungy guitar sound, of the aforementioned Walsh). It's a strong collection throughout in fact, with some real gems (a lovely 'I Wish I Were Blind' that any self-respecting country rock dinosaur would be proud to have written) and a pleasant, blurred-round-the-edges feel - as if you've had one glass of wine too many on a warm, sunny day and hang the consequences! This music positively shines and shimmers. Bask in its warm glow. You might not get a tan but you'll certainly feel good. |
