Also, here is the official press release for the 50 States in 50 Days tour, plus Cnn’s Mission Possible coverage of the Orange Duffel Bag.
This has been a crazy week. The Nashville floods hit…….there is alot going on with the Danny Tate campaign, and my sister Echo Montgomery Garrett is launching her latest book in Atlanta as I write this. The book is called “My Orange Duffel bag-A Journey to Radical Change”-it is a lesson in hope for teenagers that struggle through difficult circumstances.
Sam Bracken (co-author) was the product of rape, his mother abandoned him as a teen, and when he left home his one possession was an orange duffel bag. “It’s the kind of story most people would want to keep secret. But, Bracken thinks it’s important to tell his story as a way to thank those who helped him along the way and to give teenagers a lesson in hope.”
What most excites me about this project is the potential life-changing effect it could have on a young person’s life. His story is shared by millions, but in a million different ways.
The My Orange Duffel Bag Foundation was setup to address those youngsters. This is exciting to me. They are doing interesting things like providing Orange duffel bags packed with essentials like a toothbrush, a cell phone with time on it, a laptop computer, socks, etc. to teenagers that are aging out of foster care.
From their website:
“When Sam Bracken left Las Vegas for Atlanta after winning a full-ride football scholarship to the Georgia Institute of Technology, he packed everything he owned in an orange duffel bag and left behind a life of homelessness, poverty and abuse.
“In much the same way that Sam did, we want young people to pack their bags with hope and a dream for the future. We also want to encourage corporations and organizations to pack those same bags with connections to communities and tools that will help young people succeed on their journeys. Our vision is to make the orange duffel bag a symbol of hope for at-risk youth like the pink ribbon has become for breast cancer. Please join us on this adventure.” – Sam Bracken and Echo Garrett, authors of My Orange Duffel Bag: A Journey to Radical Change
We’ve established The Orange Duffel Bag Foundation as a nonprofit to show at-risk youth in a tangible way that people care about them and to help provide them with life skills training and resources that will aid them on their paths to self-sufficiency.”
Buy My Orange Duffel Bag, and attend tomorrow’s book signing in Atlanta, or connect with them on Facebook. Spread the word.
