One afternoon in Hollywood with Gary Jenkins

by Kevin on May 14, 2009

On a recent trip to Los Angeles I was joined by my longtime friend, Gary Jenkins. He happened to be in LA to headline the Jon Lovitz Comedy night, and so we hooked up to hang out a bit.

I have a wonderful new webmaster named Teri Hitt. She is a musician herself, so she “gets it” when it comes to what a musician’s website should be……which is a nice thing to have found.

Teri is the girlfriend of a college buddy of mine named Brian Hardin. They live together in Beachwood Canyon in Hollywood in an amazing home with an incredible view of downtown Los Angeles from their top story home studio.

Brian is a Grammy nominated engineer and producer, and I guess one of their favorite things to do it shove intruments in their friend’s hands and jam. So, I went there for a meeting with Teri to train me on how to run my own blog, and immediately Brian said, “what instrument do you want to play?”……..Gary said, “guitar”, and since Brian had drumsticks in his hands…..i said, “bass.”

Now, I’ve never played bass before, but I decided to give it a shot. I suggested “Here Comes My Girl” and Brian pressed the record button, and off we went. Teri filmed it. Gary slipped right into stream of consciousness verses…..it was hilarious….he is brilliant.

We had some funny things happen to us at a house concert we had done a few days before…….Bill Murray’s brother came, and I guess the wormed turned for him while in conversation with Gary…….and Mickey Dolenz from The Monkees was also in attendance.

Gary somehow worked the stories into the verses…….principally, because he didn’t know the lyrics to the verses in “Here Comes My Girl” (Tom Petty). Anyway, my apologies in advance…..it was completely unplanned!

I told ya’! I’m sorry. You might remember that Gary was the guy that fell down laughing when my ex tried to dress me? post with your friends.

I love this Petty song. One of my all time favorites. Next time you’re in germany we got to play “Where ever you are” and we both play bass ;)

Kevin May 14, 2009 at 11:13 am

That sounds like a deal. I hope to get to Germany in January.

I am posting here so Kevin does not look like a big loser. Wait…..I probably wasn’t supposed to say that…….sorry…..;)

But coming back here gave me the opportunity to watch it a SECOND time!! You were wearing longjohns because it was cold, yet you took your pants off because you were warm?? Now I’m wondering what was going on that we didn’t get to see in the video. And I still like the boots.

Kevin May 14, 2009 at 11:23 am

I swear it was completely innocent. It was cold outside, yet warm on the inside. As things should be…….i just didn’t plan on it.

Oh goodness, this was hilarious. Made my day, and I can empathize with those double-chin looks in photos–thanks goodness for the delete button, that’s all I have to say.

Nice looseys, Kevin, but the boots rock.

I live here in the LA area. When was it cold?!

Kevin May 14, 2009 at 12:00 pm

It WAS coldish in LA that day…………look, I have no leg fat…….my legs get cold!
All the fat is on Gary’s chin! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Dude…that was funny….banjo stuff was great. Man, what a great day. Glad we did that. That song is to HIGH for me. Fun day. And yes, it was the week before Valentines and it was COLD and rainy in LA.

Of course, the funniest thing was that accent Gary was using before you start playing. What was it supposed to be?

Kevin May 16, 2009 at 11:13 pm

I think Kevin Cosnter’s “Robin Hood” accent!
