The most terrifying gig I ever did…..

Today I played the scariest gig i’ve ever played-my son’s preschool. I was asked to come and speak in front of twenty odd four year olds. Well, they weren’t odd, but you know what I mean.

I was wrangled into this last week, and agreed. Over the weekend I thought about it a couple of times, but didn’t get the guitar out and work on anything.

This morning found me in a panic to learn “Bob the Builder”…..which I did. It was the best thing I could have done. It went down a storm with the collection of 2 and a half to 4 year olds. They were really sweet. They did not turn on me like I envisioned in my worst nightmares, and were very responsive when I asked them if they had any questions about “musicians” or “music”…………sample:

“any questions?”…….a hand goes up…….”Yes, sally”……….Sally says, “I have a dog named Bernie”
“any more questions?”…another hand goes up……”Yes, Fred”……Fred says, “I like to wear blue shoes”

I told them that I would be lecturing on copyright law for an hour or so after preschool if anyone was interested-no takers.

Principally on my mind was not embarrassing my son in any way. I had horrible images of messing up career day at my son’s preschool, and somehow scaring him emotionally in front of his classmates.

Steve Martin’s Parenthood is one of my all-time favorite movies, and one scene in particular flashes into my mind alot these days.

Martin is coaching his son’s baseball team, and has made him the second baseman. His somewhat troubled son misses a game winning fly ball, and the scene immediately switches to Martin’s fantasy of how he screwed up his son’s life by making him play second base………brilliant.

I watched this clip while I was preparing this blog, and once again was blown away by “Parenthood”…….what an amazing movie.

The “gig” this afternoon went well, and when I asked him if it was ok on the way home………from his carseat in the back……he said, “it was great, daddy”……….that made me feel SO good. The best feeling in the world.

An earlier blog where my son calls me “hot and fat.”

I'm sure the kids loved you. My son was a boy scout, I think I earned as many patches over the years as he did.....it's amazing the things we do, for love.

If you need any advice on the proper method for pooping in the woods....I'm your girl;)
  • Sadly, these days it ain't wise to bring out a camera anywhere near the young folk. It is sad that our world has sunk so low that one can't even film a soccer game anymore. Very sad.
So, no, it won't be on youtube.
Plus, my son later told his mom that "Bob the Builder"........."went on a little long!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Ha, ha, the little tyke........tells me "you were great", and then tells his mom the real deal!
  • Kevin, and you didn't video tape this! Or, are you holding out on us. Obviously, all is well.
    Take care.

  • Kevin: Your story is so cool. First of all, having the guts to face those kids is one thing and then to learn "Bob the Builder." You aced it; thanks for sharing. Your writing is great and carried me right along with you.
